Arnold Palmer Designs New Lonnie Poole Golf Course at NC State University

Arnold Palmer designed the new Lonnie Poole Golf Course on the sprawling campus of NC State University and, at the course’s opening, the 79-year-old golf legend made an appearance and even took a few shots. With one fast shot, he thrust the ball 50 yards down the course’s phenomenal driving range and he made several statements to reporters as he welcomed golfers to play at the new NC State University Golf Course, the Lonnie Poole Golf Course. “Only time will make it much, much better,” Palmer said remarking about the new $12 million dollar par-71 that he designed for NC State’s campus.
Palmer designed the course, the first of its kind built inside Raleigh/Durham’s Interstate 440 beltline, to spotlight views of Raleigh’s immaculate skyline. Having spent time in the area during his college days at Wake Forest in the 1940’s and 1950’s when the school was still located within the city of Wake Forest, Palmer has an appreciation for the beauty of the land in this wonderful region and appropriately designed a NC Golf Course that highlights all of the impressive land features found here. While he may have gone to a rival school, Palmer still remains a true part of the Wolfpack, saying, “In this day and age, to have what North Carolina State will have in this golf course is something that is starting to spread.” He went on to add, “It’s so nice to see this happening here in Raleigh and for the university”.
Now that the Lonnie Poole Golf Course is open, it will be used by both the Men’s and Women’s Golf Teams at North Carolina State University and it will host special events and tournaments for the school. The first big event that the course is hosting now is the V Foundation’s Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament, a fantastic event that benefits a cancer-research group that is affiliated with N.C. State’s former basketball coach Jim Valvano. For the past two years, the event has been held at the hallowed ground of Pinehurst, but for the 13 years prior to this, it was held at a suburban Raleigh NC Golf Course. This year, the Lonnie Poole Golf Course at NC State is happy to welcome the event back to Raleigh and NC State to help benefit the foundation named after Valvano, a Wolfpack coach who led the team to a national title in 1983.
