Pinehurst Intercollegiate to take place March 12-14, 2010

Undoubtedly one of the most celebrated names in North Carolina Golf, Pinehurst NC is home to what many consider the most prestigious courses in the country, if not the world. This breathtaking resort has hosted some of the most esteemed North Carolina Golf tournaments and looks forward to hosting both the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open championships in 2014. Nearer in the future, Pinehurst’s Course No. 8 will host the 2010 Pinehurst Intercollegiate.

Slated to take place on the weekend of March 12-14, 2010, the Pinehurst Intercollegiate is an annual invitational of Division I collegiate teams that has been taking place at Pinehurst for the past twenty years. Sponsored by Gatorade, this event consists of 54 holes of stroke play which begin on Friday and end at the close of the tournament, on Sunday. The public is encouraged to attend this free event, but spectator carts are forbidden.

Those planning to attend the 2010 Pinehurst Intercollegiate can look forward to watching fifteen of the top Division I teams go head to head for the title. Current defending champion Penn State will be going up against rivals Virginia Tech, Michigan State, and VCU during this competitive three-day tournament.

Designed by Tom Fazio in 1996, the 18-hole Course No. 8 was constructed to commemorate Pinehurst NC’s centennial. Fazio did his best to include signature Ross features, which make the course both a challenge and a delight. The greens and tees are close together so strolling the links is a breeze, and the many changes in elevation make the course demanding, yet rewarding, one. Comprised of 420 acres of rolling hills and pristine wetlands, this course has hosted a number of impressive tournaments, including the 1997 and 1998 PGA National Club Professional Championships, the 2006 Women’s ACC Championship, and the 2008-2009 PGA McGladrey Team Championships, and was the first course in the state to be recognized as a Certified Signature Sanctuary.
