Good news for golfers that love hitting the revered golf courses that the Sandhills NC Golf region is known for – the legendary Pinehurst No.2 course reopened March 4th! The Pinehurst No. 2 course was undergoing restoration by Coore and Crenshaw to take advantage of the course’s natural layout. Designed by Donald Ross, the Pinehurst No. 2 Golf Course is well known as it has hosted the most championships out of all other courses in the states and in 2014 will host will do something no other course in history has ever had the honor of executing – hosting both the Men’s and Women’s U.S. Opens. So what can players expect to find on the newly renovated Pinehurst No. 2 Golf Course?

The renovation has returned the natural, famed layout that Ross created and now the course has no rough, larger playing areas, more options and strategies and the natural elements used to create the course bring back the aura of Ross’s original No. 2 Course. Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore brought back sand, hardpan and native wiregrass and uncovered many of the original elements that made this historic course such a standout. Players can now experience the course as Donal Ross had intended, as the renowned course renovators took the course back to the way that it looked in the 1930s and 1940s. In a letter to members Coore refers to the course, “It is, without question, a masterpiece”. He then described how the course had been overgrown in terms of the lush green grass that covered much of its layout in latter years, and the fact that the fairways had simply become too narrow. He writes, “Bunkers were no longer accessible because balls would be trapped in four inches of thick rough before reaching the hazard”. Coore and Crenshaw’s main goal was to return the course to its original format, taking advantage of all of the amazing angels and strategies that Donald Ross had originally set. With all of the nostalgic updates, the lengths of the holes and the greens remain essentially the same, Coore communicated in his letter.
