The Ross legacy on display in North Carolina

With the US Open set to be held in Pinehurst NC, the dean of American golf course architecture will receive a lot of attention for his masterpiece in Pinehurst No. 2.

Donald Ross, who is the dean of American golf course architecture in case any of you are wondering, designed 55 courses in North Carolina. While none are probably more famous then Pinehurst No. 2, each have their own distinct challenges. Those courses dot the North Carolina golf scene all across the state.

In the Sandhills, Pinehurst No. 2 is joined by the Pine Needles course, which has hosted three US Women’s Open, and Mid Pines are joined by Southern Pines Golf Club as iconic courses. Each of the three take full advantage of the landscape to challenge golfers of all levels.

The mountains feature two nationally renowned courses. Linville Golf Club has received national praise for best courses you can play, as well as seen the No. 3 par 4 named one of the greatest holes of golf. Joining Linville Golf Club is the Omni Grove Park Inn. Perhaps known more for the nature beauty that surrounds the course, the course is truly an impressive creation in the mountains. For those wanting to make it an Asheville NC weekend golf trip, the Asheville Municipal Golf Course is also a Ross designed course.

Other outstanding courses include the Sedgefield Country Club, which hosts the PGA’s Wyndham Championship, in Greensboro NC is another of Ross’ crown jewels and Wilmington Municipal Golf Course, which is located on the Cape Fear River.

Before you watch PGA’s best golfers compete on Ross’ masterpiece this summer, be sure to make plans to play one of his North Carolina golf courses to experience the legacy of the dean of American golf architecture.
