The state of North Carolina has a rich heritage, and so do many of its most historic golf courses. Since 1898, golfers have been enjoying the pleasing scenery and challenging holes that have become synonymous with Pinehurst Golf Resort. For nearly as long, the Men’s North & South Amateur Championship has been helping to distinguish golf’s greatest players. From June 29 – July 3, 2010, history will be made once again as the top amateurs compete for the infamous Putterboy Trophy during the 110th Annual Men’s North & South Amateur Championship.
This celebrated Pinehurst Golf Tournament was so named in an attempt to ease tensions between two regions of the United States which, just a few years before the tournament’s inception, had been bitter rivals. Today, it holds the distinction of being the longest consecutively running amateur championship in the history of the United States. Many of golf’s greatest players—including Jack Nicklaus, Walter Travis, and Curtis Strange—made names for themselves during this prestigious tournament.
This year’s tournament will feature only amateurs who have applied or been invited. These players will participate in six rounds of match play, at the end of which a new winner will be presented with the Putterboy Trophy. The action will take place on the hallowed ground of Pinehurst No. 2, as it has for the past century. This noteworthy course was designed by Donald Ross, who spent more time creating Pinehurst No. 2 than any of the countless other courses on which he worked. These renowned greens have been called some of the best in existence and are evocative of the Scottish courses where the sport began. As if it could get any better, the course is currently undergoing a renovation by Coore and Crenshaw, Inc., in order to restore its natural and strategic integrity.
